Prague: “The City of a Hundred Spires”
Prague, “the City of a Hundred Spires,” is bisected by the Vltava River and tied together by 10 bridges. It is an architectural and historic paradise with an incredible collection of colorful baroque buildings, Gothic churches, public squares, hidden courtyards and so much history. Prague is filled with experiences you’ll remember a lifetime and is a city made for walkers. There are many sections of the city to explore, but I suggest concentrating your time in Malá Strana, Old Town, New Town, Josefov, and Mustek.
Top 5 sights you must see:
1. Prague Castle is the largest castle complex in the world, this vast fortress, built ca. 870 AD, requires a day to tour, but it's well worth it. Climb the tower for excellent views.
2. One of the most recognizable old bridges in Europe, the magnificent Charles Bridge has 32 unique points of interest along its 621-meter span. Built in 1357, it is the chalice that holds hundreds of stories. (Grab your favorite guide book for this--it's well worth the read.)
3. Wenceslas Square in New Town is home to the National Museum and numerous other architectural treasures. It was created in the 14th century during the reign of Charles IV as a horse market and has become one of the city's most important public spaces. Sit down and grab a beer at one of the many restaurants that line the walking streets. It's a great place to people-watch.
4. Prague's Jewish Quarter was originally located in the Castle District, but by the 1200s had spread to the city's Josefov area. Its sad history led to the district's transformation in the late 1800s, when large sections were demolished to make way for Art Nouveau apartment buildings.
5. The historic center of Prague, the Old Town (Staré Mesto) is where you'll find the splendid Old Town Square, which is where you'll find the Old Town Hall, Astronomical Clock and Tyn Church. Each hour, the clock springs to life and entertains all who gaze in its direction. Be sure to make the ascent (by stairs or elevator) to the top of the Old Town Hall Tower for great views of Prague.
Behind the church, you'll find small walking paths and streets that lead to courtyards and hidden gems. Eat at Restaurant Ungelt. The food is perfection and the wine list is admirable.
In addition to being incredibly beautiful, Prague is incredibly inexpensive. That's one of the reasons why you'll see so many bachelor and bachelorette parties roaming the city. Speaking of which, here's a quick list of where to get your party on: U Sodu, Chapeau Rouge, Double Trouble, Retro, and Roxy.
