Italy's Hidden Gems I
My short series on all things Italia this month feature some incredible 5 Star experiences you might not automatically search out on your travels to the hub of the central MED.
To kick things off, I’ll share one of the most incredible finds I might not have tried otherwise on a recent trip if it were not for a tip from some dear friends that have travelled often to Roma and indulged in this special spot more than once. It’s in the thick of things yet still a bit off the beaten path, so it could easily get overlooked.
It begins with an awe inspiring 40 minute or so stroll en route to Trevi Fountain . You’ll start at the breathtaking Spanish Stairs, Rome and #PiazzaDiSpagna to explore the narrow streets and alleyways riddled with character and embossed as a walking museum of history.
Along your journey you’ll come upon our hidden gem Alfredo’s Ristorante Il Vero Alfredo. http://www.ilveroalfredo.it .
With it’s origins and family run heritage dating back to 1908, this is the birthplace of fettuccini alfredo. Over the years, this quaint yet at the same time grand dining room has drawn dignitaries and famous celebrities dating back to hollywood royalty Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford who dined here on their honeymoon. Ever since it’s apparently a stop for those “in the know” that cannot be missed.
Enter and you are transported to what feels like what I would imagine the grandeur of classic Pre World War II Italian European dining sophistication feel like. The setting superb, but it doesn’t come close to the culinary surprise that lay before you.
Although generally not my favorite 5 star pasta choice, I had to try “it” – “Le Vere Maestosissime Fettuccine all’Alfredo” (aka their infamous Fettuccini Alfredo).
This is not only a culinary experience but a visual one. The in house pasta is made fresh daily and is prepared with sauce made table side for you to marvel and get those taste buds swooning. OMG it delivers! This is THE best pasta I’ve ever had in my life. Add to that some of Northern Italy’s finest red wines and “Tagliere di salumi e formaggi” (fresh mozzarella and sliced cured meats).
We are off to a brilliant start. But it only sets the stage for entrees that includes the very best veal I’ve experienced in my life – the “Scaloppine di vitello con punte di asparagi.”
Top everything off with an espresso; and although there is no cannoli here for me to indulge in for dessert (I have to try one wherever I go when in Roma – it’s a thing), there’s still delicious chocolato gelato and “Profiteroles della casa,” which are their house made fresh profiteroles that are absolutely exquisite.
While completing our evening, its important to point out the attention to celebration happening around us. The detail the staff provides for its regular guests celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, and other occasions is heartwarming. Sparklers flying yet delivered in a subtle celebratory manner make guests feel honored yet still able to celebrate the way that suits both their and guests joining unique personality and occasion. You will feel truly transported into local culture and surrounded by Italian heritage.
Post dining includes continuing our #5startravlguru stroll to the Trevi fountain for people watching and to walk off some of the damage done. That said , next time in Roma, check the diet at the door and whether you are used to 5 star dining or it’s a treat, you must go to this once in a lifetime culinary treasure that delivers on history, beauty, experience, and some of the most incredible food you will ever eat in your life. You’ll be so glad you did. This memorable evening activity won’t break the bank, foodies will definitely not be disappointed, and most of all – Memories will be made.
